Hello readers,

This week we are being asked to discuss how we should involve student success data in our short and long term planning. The information that we gather from our students and about our students helps keep us in the feedback loop of learning about our students. When we decide on what we should try to teach our students, it is incredibly important to see our students in both a classroom context and a larger context. The information that we are able to scan on a day-to-day basis can help us learn about how our students behave in a classroom, and on a more academic side, where their strengths and weaknesses are.

It follows suit that a teacher should scale their work appropriately with the strengths of their students to both help the students achieve their maximum potential but also to help keep the classes motivation. On a larger scale, should a group of teachers attempt to gather more information about their school and where their students fit in the schematics of the neighborhood, the teacher can better understand the social aspect of the class. This leads into helping the teacher make better connections with the students interests and navigate their lessons differently. The type of information we gather is absolutely core to the development of a high-success environment; if we constantly provide unattainable goals for our students, we are far less likely to inspire them to reach the curriculum expectations. On the opposite end, for example, providing visual explanations and asking for visualizations of answers from your students works best with what students feel the most comfortable with. This also builds into the concept of IEPs being another part of the classroom; if we are to treat it as something that can learn about the student, it helps normalize a culture of inclusivity and accommodation. This in turn helps us support every single one of our learners in our future classrooms, no matter what set of people we actually get.
