Teaching Philosophy (A work in progress.)

I'll admit, I'm still a greenhorn when it comes to learning to teach, so any and all of my views have a limited basis to work from. That being said, in understanding the Standards of Excellence, one can determine what is important for both teacher and student alike.

We also must re-evaluate our preconceptions about education and create rich opportunities for students to demonstrate their understandings. Towards this end, I have worked towards creating strong assessments as learning, assessments for learning, and ultimately, assessments of learning. Understanding that learning looks different in every student and that in turn every student is an individual is a powerful thing to remember, as well. I hope to create a culturally responsible pedagogy so that every student has an equal chance to succeed and develop their own skills in my classroom.

I will finish this wall of text with a quote:

“One child, one teacher, one book, one pen can change the world.” - Malala Yousafzai

Very simply put, I believe that we exist as lifelong learners - we must be actively seeking out opportunities to develop our knowledge about the world around us. However, we cannot learn and develop our own understandings off the work of someone else. To this end, we must engage with things on our own and challenge our own understandings. Carrying this idea into the classroom, we as teachers must create open opportunities for students to learn. In turn, we should keep students as active agents in their learning and development towards becoming a 21st Century Citizen.
